This body of work is a photographic documentary and celebration of the building vacated by the Johnson Publishing Company, located at 820 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

The Johnson Building was completed in 1972 by designers Arthur Elrod & William Raiser. It was the first skyscraper owned by an African American in Chicago’s Loop, and was the second major downtown building designed by an African American. Of the many Johnson Publishing Company businesses, the most well known are Ebony and Jet magazines.

After inhabiting the space for almost forty years, the company sold their $8 million headquarters and I was privileged to document the space a few years later in 2013-2014.
